Theater and Dance

The artistic organization Škvadra was founded in 2018 in Zagreb. Škvadra is a group of 9 young professional dance artists, born out of the need to create their opportunities, collaborations, and projects. One of the main interests of the artistic organization Škvadra is collaboration with other dancers as well as artists working in different artistic mediums. Additionally, driven by the desire for change and revitalization in dance art in Croatia, they aim to bring theater and dance closer to people through their work, making it accessible, new, and challenging. Therefore, Škvadra’s interest is focused on performances in theatrical spaces and exploring alternative performance spaces, site-specific performances, different advertising methods, and promoting dance art.

The members of Škvadra are: Anđela Bugarija, Ema Crnić, Marta Habulin-Satinović, Ema Kani, Gendis Putri Kartini, Eva Kocić, Šimun Stankov, Margareta Firinger, and Una Štalcar-Furač.

Škvadra has, until now, realized projects in collaboration with other institutions, organizations, or collectives, emphasizing an interest in site-specific interventions and performances in alternative spaces, works in gallery spaces, as well as in film formats and video works

We are dependent on communication, but how do we achieve it? What makes it effective or impossible? What happens when the content of the message is not as important as the manner in which the message is conveyed? Through dance, we explore these issues, displace them from the context of everyday life, and insert them into the theater, attempting to provide answers or pose new questions to these inquiries. We investigate levels of communication, from the simplest transmission of a message from sender to receiver, to other more complex components that constitute a conversation, i.e., mutual exchange of information.
With this open-ended play, we leave room to embrace playful thoughts unburdened by content.

The idea of the body in flight, the feeling of weightlessness, as if held by air, then let go, briefly in balance that disappears as soon as you become aware of it – a fleeting achievement with a lasting impression. We did that, we learned that way. You try until it passes, sometimes it could be measured, and sometimes not. I shift my weight forward and it propels me into a fall that I try to control my way, you follow after me. A smooth round hole in the asphalt, filled with our attempts. Sometimes the whole afternoon, sometimes the whole day. I’m proud of us. I’m disappointed in us. It’s not the same for me, and I know it’s not the same for you. Here, we share motivation like we share water when someone is thirsty, like we share time, and like we share air. Soon it will be dark, I have to go now, see you tomorrow. I can’t wait to start again.

Stories can change very quickly, and we change with them. Do you remember when we caught the ground under our feet?

On July 3, 2013, SC Pool was saved. Support came from all sides, machines were stopped. The happy house suffered, the cultural scene of the Student Center had been collapsing for a long time, but SC Pool remained in place.

On August 9, 2019, SC Pool was demolished. This time they devised a more efficient strategy. The pool did not endure, but fortunately, memories cannot be taken away by bulldozers. There is sorrow for brighter times and the Student Center as an unavoidable point of urban culture, not only for students and not only for Zagreb. But as long as there is asphalt, there will be skateboarding.

Pierottijeva 11

(AKC Medika)

CAMERA AND EDITING: Karla Kocić, Roland Rostohar
PRODUCTION: UO Škvadra in collaboration with AKC Medika

The film “Pierottijeva 11” represents one of the reactions of the Artistic Organization Škvadra to events in the city of Zagreb. The lack of workspace, the closure of places for urban and street culture, unclear and illogical political decisions that have a huge impact on us as young artists, recent disasters that struck the city and exacerbated existing problems…

AKC Medika is one of those urban spaces for gathering, meeting, sharing art, seemingly in an inescapable situation of imminent disappearance. This film is dedicated to its time of sharing work and art in Medika, as an entity that has been supporting, providing space, opening up and creating collaborations for years, critically observing and fighting for its continued existence alongside the people within it.

As young artists who create and present their work through the artistic organization, one of the important aspects of our professional and personal lives is experiencing our city and the spaces within it. Therefore, we feel the need to share and communicate about topics that affect us.

Monomyth

The MONOMYTH existed scattered in folk tales long before Joseph Campbell recognized it through meticulous analysis of a corpus of folk stories. In his role as a catalyst, Campbell introduced the MONOMYTH to the world as a pattern hidden behind “every story ever told and at its core, older than the pyramids, Stonehenge, and the oldest cave drawings.” He named this narrative paradigm the “hero’s journey.” Setting out on a journey through time, space, theorists, artists, and their works, always manifesting anew, the MONOMYTH eventually reached the musician Branimir Norac. Norac heard it, set it to music, and sent it further on its way. The MONOMYTH, now in the form of a composition, crosses the threshold and arrives before Škvadra.

Despite catastrophe and all accompanying hardships, the emancipated MONOMYTH endures as the first, profound, primordial story in the bodies of Škvadra until the climax, which you are about to witness. It seems that the MONOMYTH itself has undergone Campbell’s hero’s journey, consisting of a catalyst, crossing the threshold, catastrophe, and climax, but on its journey, like all things that travel, it has developed in an unforeseen direction. Now it is closer to the thoughts of the great American writer Thornton Wilder, “Myth is not a story that is read from left to right, from beginning to end, but a thing that is held in front of the eyes all the time.”

At Home on the Beach

(May-June 2021)

“At Home on the Beach” is a series of 4 short dance films that represent a part of the process of working on the theatrical performance titled “The Beach.” We consider these films as a preparation for going to the beach, i.e., as a preparation for the work on the performance. Guided by the idea of the performance, the films address the preparation and the journey to the beach with a desire to achieve an idyllic vacation and absolute peace, which actually brings along significant stress, nervousness, and issues. The films use an ironic, romanticized, and humorous approach to human activities that we sometimes recognize as senseless and hysterical.

“Beach” unfolds, magnifies, and pixelates events that take place at the location of a real beach, providing them the opportunity to become dramatic situations, choreographies. We refer to the beach as social intimacy, a place where social norms and societal consensus are established, revealing the possibility for every detail to become an opportunity for dramatic-dance shaping.

OBLIQUE

(KNAP)

CHOREOGRAPHER: Šimun Stankov
DANCERS: Ema Crnić, Ema Kani, Eva Kocić, Gendis Putri Kartini

The project “Oblique” is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Artistic Organization Škvadra and the electronic jazz band Trokut. It is a dual musical and scenic performance that explores the connection between movement and rhythm, melodic-harmonic forms, and textures. The project challenges performers to explore different contexts within their performance spheres – musicians in the realm of music and dancers in the realm of movement. The performers delve into the question of fixed composition in both music and movement, contrasting it with structured improvisation as a tool through which performers create their rendition.

STORIES: Ante Zlatko Stolica, from the book “Blizina svega” (The Proximity of Everything)

Garage Kamba becomes a kind of temporary Škvadra archive, gathering reflections on the collective’s previous works, accumulated artistic interests, as well as questions related to collectivity that seek possible answers and, in the process, open up new questions. Engaging in a dialogue with the spatial constraints of the garage itself, the common denominator that emerged is the idea of overcrowding, approached from three perspectives – the space of intimacy, the space of expectations, and the space of production without tangible goals.
